Manufacturer, distributor or supplier
It is the manufacturer, distributor or supplier's responsibility to inform the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Vehicle Safety Standards (VSS) Branch of the department where a safety recall has been identified.

- Contact the Recalls Team
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) is the main authority on product recalls, including for vehicles.
The ACCC has guidance available for suppliers to voluntarily initiate their own recalls after becoming aware that one or more of their products presents a safety risk.
Another place to obtain information about product recalls is from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). A number of automotive companies are members of the FCAI.
- FCAI Code of Practice for Conduct of an Automotive Safety Recall
This industry code is tailored to motor vehicle recalls which describes the procedures to be followed when a member is advised (or becomes aware) that a Members product may have a safety defect.
Advise the department of a recall
Once you have notified the ACCC of your recall via the Submit a recall form, you will receive a Product Safety Recall Submission receipt. Please forward this receipt to the department (firstname.lastname@example.org) with any other relevant information, which may include:
- a copy of the technical bulletin
- a copy of the customer letter
- affected vehicle VIN lists
Recall progress reporting
Vehicle Safety Standards (VSS) monitors the progress of voluntary recalls for road vehicles in the Australian market.
Manufacturers and suppliers should provide VSS with monthly updates on the progress of these recalls using the template below:
- Voluntary Recall Rectification Notification Template XLSX: 63 KB
Please note, this template is only for reporting the progress updates of existing voluntary recalls.
This template should not be used to notify the ACCC or VSS of new recalls, or for reporting on compulsory recalls.
Please forward your monthly recall performance reports to email@example.com
Vehicle recalls under the RVSA
In the future, recalls of road vehicles and approved road vehicle components that are unsafe, or non-compliant with national road vehicle standards, will be administered by the department under the Roads Vehicle Standards legislation.
Please visit the Vehicle recalls under the Road Vehicle Standards legislation page for further information.
