Australia's Policy Approach to Baro-VNAV Implementation
The introduction of Approach to Landing Procedures with Vertical Guidance (APV) has been identified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as an internationally significant measure to reducing accidents involving Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) for all ICAO States.
One of the means of achieving APV is through the implementation of Barometric Vertical Navigation (Baro-VNAV) approach procedures.
The policy on the rollout of Baro-VNAV approach procedures in Australia was finalised in 2016.
In line with the policy, Airservices, in coordination with CASA, published a list of more than 100 initial candidate aerodromes. As at 17 June 2021, APV approaches have been implemented and are in operational use at 136 Australian aerodromes. Another 4 aerodromes have been identified and are planned for implementation in 2022-2023.
The completion of this program represents a significant contribution to the reduction of risk of CFIT during approach and landing operations. It also fulfils Australia's commitment to ICAO Resolution A3711 which urged member States to implement APV procedures as a CFIT mitigation measure.
