The Greater Launceston Transformation - Creating Our Digital Future project is a collaborative project of regional, state and national significance that uses open data platforms and innovative smart technology to create a rich digital ecosystem across the region. The project will:
- proactively address the regions transport management issues by creating a live streaming multi modal traffic system that manages congestion and supports the use of alternative modes of transport
- inspire our next generation of technology and start up entrepreneurs by creating world class education programs in Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual reality
- digitise our internationally significant cultural assets in an open platform for the entire world to view and explore.
Greater Launceston Transformation—Creating Our Digital Future is a transformative regional smart cities project that uses enabling technology and insights from our first Smart Cities project. The project will install a traffic management system across the city that collects real-time data enabling road network demands to be managed in real-time. The real-time data will be combined with pedestrian and public transport data to develop a multi modal model that will enable better planning outcomes for all modes of transport to be achieved.
The IoT in Schools program will deliver 600 IoT kits to 40 schools across the region preparing students for careers and future studies in STEAM. The project will digitise high value cultural assets in Launceston, storing these in an open platform that enables discoverability across and within collections. The project will culminate in the development of two extended reality products that demonstrate the opportunities presented by the digital collection.
The Project outcomes will be:
- Installation of a smart traffic system through the purchase and installation of smart traffic management technology to develop a live traffic management system to manage traffic flows.
- Completion of a Dynamic Multi Modal Model to utilize smart data for decision making on investment in infrastructure, transport services and relationship to land use planning.
- Implementation of a live platform and analytics system utilizing a network of sensors to provide ongoing data about the use of existing transport infrastructure and city assets.
- Completion of a Green travel framework to encourage a shift to walking, cycling and public transport for city based mobility.
- Implementation and delivery of IoT for schools program aimed at grades 4 to 5.
- Digitisation of high value cultural assets from the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and the University of Tasmania.
- Development of collection management and an open cultural asset platform.
- Development of extended reality programs.
Project partners have developed a collaborative strategic project that will produce significant social, environmental and economic outcomes for local, regional and state levels.
At a state level the project directly delivers strategies identified within the Tasmanian Cultural and Creative Industries Strategy, supports the Tasmanian Government Open Data Policy, delivers key outcomes identified within the Jobs and Economic Plan and pilots solutions to address traffic congestion issues identified within the Launceston Traffic review.
At a regional level the project directly supports the Creativity and Innovation, Liveability and Amenity and Economic Development sections within the Policy Framework of the Greater Launceston Plan. The IoT and cultural asset digitisation also addresses the plan for greater retention and higher education achievement. Locally the project directly addresses priorities and goals within each of the council's strategic plans.
