Project summary

The project aims to establish an open sourced platform integrating historical and real time mobility data from the Macquarie Park District. The project will allow scenarios to be tested before stress occurs, improving the management of pedestrian movements to cope with the anticipated growth of the region.

The challenge

Traffic congestion in Macquarie Park is a major problem and becoming an even greater priority given projected growth of the area.


This project will create open source data and sustainable smart-technology platform across Macquarie Park District, leveraging Internet of Things technologies. Congestion will be reduced through better planning via integrating historical and real-time data.


This project will bring the following benefits:

  1. real time data available to the community on accessibility and transport issues;
  2. contribute to more efficient use of council resources and service delivery;
  3. expanded capacity, opportunity and motivation for connection across a precinct.


  1. The project designed, developed, and installed 75 IoT devices in the Macquarie Park area to collect pedestrian movement data.
